    Enables calmodulin binding activity and calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase activity. Involved in several processes, including negative regulation of production of miRNAs involved in gene silencing by miRNA; positive regulation of cardiac muscle hypertrophy in response to stress; and positive regulation of connective tissue replacement. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including calcineurin-NFAT signaling cascade; cardiac muscle hypertrophy in response to stress; and regulation of transcription, DNA-templated. Located in several cellular components, including Z disc; cytosol; and mitochondrion. Part of calcineurin complex. Is active in Schaffer collateral - CA1 synapse and glutamatergic synapse. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; genitourinary system; gut gland; jaw; and thymus primordium. Used to study dilated cardiomyopathy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 91. Orthologous to human PPP3CA (protein phosphatase 3 catalytic subunit alpha).
